Energy
The word energy has Greek origins, which means ‘active’ or ‘working’. The layman definition of energy would be that energy is the capacity to perform work. As energy is a scalar physical quantity, its International System Unit is joules. Energy in itself is a property of objects or their systems. There are several different forms of energy basically because every object is ‘working’ in some way or the other. Whether it is the chemical bonds of carbohydrates being broken for energy or whether it is chemical reactions taking place in a test tube, all require energy.
The uses of energy can be seen almost in every aspect of the human nature. The utilization of latent chemical energy in coal, oil and gas, released in the form of heat to power combustion engines and drive steam turbines has really contributed to the development of modern civilization as it is today.
Various natural phenomena can be explained with the concept of energy. Rain, wind, snow, lightning, storms, and earthquakes are all some of the examples of the transformation of energy.
All of the above mentioned phenomena can be explained with the law of conservation of energy which states that energy cannot be destroyed. Rather it can only be converted from one form to another.
